US 69 Lumberton-Kountze Project Update

Project Information

The proposed project stretches approximately 23 miles from Cooks Lake Road (south of Lumberton) to FM 420 (north of Kountze) in Hardin County. US 69 is a north-south highway that runs from Port Arthur to Denison, Texas and is designated as a hurricane evacuation route.

The purpose of the US 69 project is to provide an updated facility to support safe and efficient north/south movement of people and goods between Beaumont and Woodville. The proposed project aims to do the following:

Provide an alternate south-north evacuation route for the growing population of Hardin and adjacent counties
Improve safety by providing an updated facility to reduce congestion on existing US 69
Address increasing demand from development and freight traffic

Q: What is the purpose of this project?
A: The purpose of the US 69 project is to provide an updated facility to support safe and efficient north/south movement of people and goods between Beaumont and Woodville. The proposed project aims to do the following:

Q: How was the proposed recommended alternative developed?
A: A collection of preliminary alternative routes were developed considering the potential impacts to the environment, community, and connectivity for the region. Based on public input received during the May 2023 public meetings, TxDOT has eliminated the previous alternatives from further study and has developed a revised recommended alternative for public review and input.

Q: Have final decisions about the project been made?
A: No, the project is planned, but not yet funded. The proposed recommended alternative has been selected based on community and local official input.It is being presented to the community for further refinement.

Q: When could construction begin for this project?
A: Construction is planned to begin in 2032. However, this date is contingent upon the identification of funding.
